Advice to our 20, 30 and 40 somethings... 17 Years, 6 Months ago
|

DUDES! (and Dudettes),
Exercise your bodies!! It's been 6 years since my last hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and, by some coincidence, it's been 6 years since I've done anything for my cardiovascular system.
Now, at 53, I'm suffering, trying to knock this abused bod into shape for my June hiking/fishing trip in WY. After 2 weeks of power walking with full pack on the flats, I ventured into the mountains today, sans pack. Man, my quads are screaming, and I sure did a lot of huffing and puffing for 20 minutes uphill. I had my cell with me and figured if I collapsed I'd just say "Ramsey Canyon" after dialing 911 and maybe they'd get to me in time.
Bottom line, take care of what you've got NOW. Some of the best fishing requires hiking, or at least long walks to great spots. My weight ain't too bad, it's the lack of exercise that I've got to overcome.
Just my two cents.

or the doctor will tell you that you have mild congestive heart failure and you have to take ALL these pills AND work out every day.

Instead of standing all day at your secret hole on the trinity. You should move around maybe even bring some kind of floatation device. you old fart.

Don't tell me I didn't get any exercise landing all those fish! Hell, I had to buy a wrist brace so I could push my pain limit a little further. However, you don't realize it but you speak truely, White Man.
This year I'm gonna lift weights for a couple of months before SH season so I can better handle those 20 fish days.
But, why should I run all over the T if I don't need to? To leave fish to find fish?

You sure it was the fish causing wrist pain and not the Port?

LIke I told you before jigs are not flies and were never meant to be cast on a fly rod. pull out your credit card and buy a more suitable set up. You wont need a wrist brace.

Port EASES the pain, Phil. I'm looking forward to my CA FF mag. Living in AZ, I'm the red-headed stepchild...who knows when I'll receive my copy?

Two of my ex-girlfriends are now gay. I prefer to think it's because they concluded they'd never find another guy as great as me, so they went the other way.
I also prefer to think it was those 20 plus fish days that did-in my wrist. Why should I change? I'm havin' fun and I can, and do, easily switch techniques!
Now, get out there and start hiking while you're still young!

Do you hate yourself or something? 17 Years, 6 Months ago

My questions is why did you let your body get out of shape in the first place?
Stay healthy, stay fit!
Nuff said!
We just got back from a trip up to the Selkirks some days with over 5,ooo+/5,ooo-. I'm the youngest in the group at 48.

Tim-
Excellent advice. Diabetic ATV riding couch potatoes will be really hurting at age 60.
Did a solo backpack over the weekend, put 20 miles on the legs in 2 days. And I will be 60 in a few months.
Leave the Dummer (er Hummer) at home, and get on the trail!

Great pic Tim!
Yeah, you'd think there was something wrong with a guy who gets in shape, hikes Mt. Toubkal (Morocco) gets out of shape, gets in shape for the Grand Canyon (Rim to rim on my 40th b-day), gets out of shape, gets back into shape for two trips down into the GC in a 5 week period, and then doesn't exercise for 6 years.
Maybe I'm just a symptom of our overworked society or maybe it's just my screwy priorities, but I think I've seen the light and I want to spread the word. You're absolutely right. Stay in shape! It's just a matter of a couple of hours a week.
Mea Culpa, mea culpa.
