Yuba and Lower Sac Report 3/7-3/9 17 Years, 7 Months ago
I had the opportunity to guide Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this past weekend. The weather was beautiful with these warm 70 degree days that we have been having in northern California. I think that spring is finally upon us. It is time to shake off those winter blues and go check out your favorite trout stream. It wont be to long now until trout opener. Those of you who are waiting to fish all of the upper streams make sure not to miss out on the good opportunities that some of our tailwaters have to offer. Here is a little summary of my last three days on the water.

The Yuba River on Friday was tough. Since the weather was warm I was expecting some great hatches out on the water. The entire day I only saw a handful of pmds, march browns, and skwalas. Nothing was coming off on anything of what I consider a consistent basis. Flats where there are usually lots of rising fish only had a single sporadic riser here and there. So with the lack of bug activity it was hard to get the fish to eat. In total we hooked 10 fiesty rainbows and landed 8 of them. Lucky for us we got a couple really nice ones that were in the 18'' range. I wish every fish fought as hard as those Yuba bows. They are hands down the strongest fighting trout I have ever seen.

The Lower Sac on Saturday and Sunday was good. On both days there were decent hatches of spring caddis and it really got the fish eating. Saturday was a lot of fun and I got the opportunity to guide Maggie (junior in high school) and Erin (5th grade) on their first ever fly fishing trip. Both of them did great and caught a handful of rainbows, but Erin out did everybody with her 18'' fish. When you are 11 and your first rainbow you ever catch is 18'' that means there are good things to come in this girls fishing future. I was thoroughly impressed with both of the girls willingness to learn and enthusiam to pull on some fish.

Sunday I had two of my regulars up from Sacramento and we hooked close to 50 fish. The real treat on Sunday was that we ran into two clipped half pounders. One halfpounder was 19'' and the other was 20''. That is the latest that I have ever caughten a steelhead on the Lower Sac. Prior to the ones yesterday the latest I had ever caught one was in the end of January. The Lower Sac is a great river. You truly get spoiled with nubers like the ones we have been having over the last several weeks.

Nice post anglernut.

Guess "RJ" hasn't yet realized this is not an acceptable place to try to drum up business for himself.

The admin said "keep the reports coming". Kind of irritating that he encourages the spam. How do you figure that the feeling is mutual?

Re:Finally.....Hey Stan, 17 Years, 7 Months ago
...ya, their administrator deleted all the posts that called
him on his spam/report (wink wink),and then injected the "Keep 'em coming"
comment. Weak.

If i was a guide, I'd hit up that board and advertise since they
obviously don't mind spam whether it's fried, baked, sauteed, broiled
or bbq'd.

Free advertising baby!!

Spam 17 Years, 7 Months ago
Mein Freund,

I'd almost rather have the spam mixed as fishing reports just to know what's going on in different fisheries...at least it provides something to read between the repetitive and already asked and answered (many times), "what if..., how do I..., should I..., or is x better than y...?" questions.

Give me fishing reports any day, from any source...at least they usually ain't boring...except for rare "serial" installments of a particular experience, day on the water, or trip!

Paul

ps-heck, I even enjoy reading the blatant spam from equipment, personal service, and literature providers as well as from non-profit organizations on this site that are cleverly disguised as having something to do with flyfishing. (again)

Ditto! 17 Years, 7 Months ago
Completely agree. Also, if I might add, if we really want to talk about spam, how are these reports any different from reports (or non reports) from other individuals that are known to be associated with a certain business/brand/logo (and I AM NOT thinking of anybody in particular)? At least the guy is upfront...

I say keep'em coming, then again what do I know...

Man, you are just too easy, Paul. I don't mind a report now and then,
but it's the weekly Bjornian numbers I don't care for.

On a side note, I just purchased a new 7wt from one of our board members.
He sent the rod (TFO Ticr) in to get some spider cracks repaired and
TFO sent him a new rod. Which in turn I bought for a killer price!

Finally, a rod to go after adult steelhead and small stripers. Now I have
to go reel shopping.

I love new toys!

Eric,
Consider the etymology of the term, "Bjornian Numbers" and then, use the reports containing those numbers as a goal when fishing that water.

Re:Yuba and Lower Sac Report 3/7-3/9 17 Years, 7 Months ago
Even tho I'm on the Lower Sac A LOT, (hence my 'handle' and have guided it for 12 years, and fished the Redding area EXCLUSIVELY for the past 5 months, with almost all days seeing Bjornian numbers, I don't feel the need to post about it each time. You'd surely get sick of it.

You all know it's a great trout fishery pretty much year 'round. You know it's caddis time right now. You know the flows are low right now. You mostly likely know a half dozen guides who work it. You know that poopah's and pt's and mico-mays work. It's nothing new...

If you want to fish it, I'm sure you will. It shouldn't take a 'fishing report/spam' from a new guide service, or whatever, to get you on the water.

So, I'll continue to fish it, and if any of you WANT reports or specifics, email me and I'll be happy to help or give some tips to help improve your numbers.....Like right now, the fish are in VERY different water than usual, and if you're not tuned in to that water, days may be tough. Faster riffles and drop offs are the usual, but not so much right now. (hint hint)
