Yes, I'm safe in Hawaii, but I'm glad I wasn't wading the lower Merced today. Rock 3B (MSN) flows went from 458 cfs at 1115 to 1740 by 1315!! What the heck happened?

I bet they found out that I was gonna be there this weekend.... that'd do it!!

It's been raining here the last 3-4 days. Clear today but the last storm is still in the high country. Looks like the upper river swelled up last night so they probably pulled the cork on the dam to dump some water.

what bug said, that would be my guess. seeing as McClure is the smallest of the three reservoirs here, it would fill the fastest and so it needs to dump first.

I was at Rock 3B last time you said you'd be there.
I headed back to the T.

Catching was good on the M awhile back. (long walk, low flows)

As far as I know, there are no major impoundments on the Upper Merced, that is, in or above the Park (there may be some smaller diversion dams for Park water supplies). As for the Merced in the valley, McClure had a big release on the 23rd, which corresponded to a large inflow at about the same time, and more recently releases have been ramping up.

Maybe someone had an itchy trigger finger, and got a little nervous, because of all the rain and snow, or perhaps they were testing the spillway, and a gate got stuck. According to CDEC, there were no scheduled releases for that time period. I'm glad I wasn't pontooning the river when that wave hit.

I'm up for some sort of Micro Bash on the Merced - all I got open is 30 March (so far)....that's a start.

'Course if it's runnin 1300 cfs....
