San Lorenzo River report 17 Years, 8 Months ago
I fished the slr from 3:30 til dark today... not to far from santa cruz. The water levels were perfect. visibility was probably between 2 1/2 to 3 ft. I fished with an indicator followed by an egg pattern, followed by a copper john. I had a nice run mostly to myself. At one point some dude came down and started skipping rocks about 30 ft from me into the river. His dog would then run after them. I was very pissed off to say the least, but gave the guy the benefit of the "doesn't know any better." Hiked up 1/2 mile and fished some more.

In both spots I had several grabs . Some felt more significant than others. I should mention that my indicator was actually a grasshopper dry fly. (i forgot to bring anything else) So most of the time the 'indicator' was submerged. I guess it was good practice on keeping a tight line. Caught a non hatchery baby on the copper john, but nothing else landed.

The steelhead season on this river is almost over, and for the 2nd year in a row I'm looking to get skunked. Sure do love getting off work early and going fishing in my home town rather than driving for 4 hours.

Here is a shot of a spot i hiked to. Sorry it's hard to see. Took it w/ my camera phone when it was almost dark out. This was a nice little run, but didn't see any fish moving through

Glad you had a nice time out there. I believe the flows yesterday were under 80cfs, ideally you want to fish it 140-260cfs. When it gets below 80 or so, most regulars lay off it and give the fish a breather. Also, most of the regulars aren't a big fan of posting any reports on blogs, but it's America right? I've seen more than stones thrown on that river, so it's best to mind your P's and Q's. But it's America right? Anyway, I'm glad you had a nice morning out there and found a few willing fish.

Sammy,

Thanks for the report. The SL is a fine river, although I have yet to catch an adult Steelhead there.

Thanks also for posting a profile...anonymous reports, like anonymous criticism are worth about as much as what you know about the author.

Thanks for sharing that Sammy,
I'm really glad we finally have some water in the river. I'm hoping to get out next Wednesday as this weekend looks like a washout. I've moved through that spot where you took the picture countless times. Altough I've never "landed" an adult on the SLR, I've witnessed plenty. Just a quick note: look for spots with bigger rocks.

I like that picture, and your camera gives it a kind of "vintage" look. Pretty cool!

Yeah, it seems like whenever I arrive at a hole someone else is already fighting a fish or a buch of the "roe guys" have taken it over. Sorry, I don't even know what "board shaper" is! Sounds like a surfing thing, which I'm far too chicken to try.
