Loretta,
Interesting article...
Last week our local paper published the data for the Fall '07 Klamath River Salmon run. In short it's nearly in total collapse, I recall the count for matures as less than 100,000 but of most concern (and what I do remember) is that only 2,000 jacks came through. The biologists are not only confused but, extremely alarmed. Theories range from the poor water quality of the river itself, to global warming, to some unknown disease contracted in their sancturaries...
Further, in the same edition was a feature article on the plight of commercial fisherman along the Northern California and Oregon Coast. Most are just barely breaking even. Some captains out of the Southern Oregon ports have been betting their entire financial lively hoods by taking their boats as far north as the Gulf of Alaska!
On top of that, here in The Basin we are in the middle of a huge irrigation water settlement fight that includes the tribes, offline irrigators, members of the water district, the BLM, and Pacific Power. It's a real mess and one that is now being made worse by the politcians. 'Bout the only good thing is that the tribes, the water district, and a handfull of offline irrigators got toether 2 years ago to hammer out an agreement that was just released last month.
One of the central issues for the Irrigation Water Settlement is their recommendation to install ladders on the 4 dams below Keno Dam or remove them. Pacific Power says it would cost more to install ladders than removing the dams. Naturally, they are playing things real close to the vest.....Things ain't bad only in the Sacramento Delta.
The good thing is that the Canadas, White Fronts, and Snows started arriving here in The Basin around the 4th of this month. The snow is rapidly diminishing and Spring is not too far off.
