Hats Off to The Fly Shop... 17 Years, 8 Months ago
|
|
I purchased a Scott fly rod this past fall from The Fly Shop and a few months later received a copy of Fly Fisherman magazine. I thought that's kinda neat - good customer relations. I've continued to receive issues of the Fly Fisherman magazine to this day.
I realize that The Fly Shop more than likely has an agreement with Fly Fisherman magazine and it's probably costing them next to nothing but none the less what a clever marketing idea.

Sonny, the black lab, ran ahead to make sure there were no gophers or jackrabbits in the way. If you don't give a dog a specific job, he'll improvise one for himself and it will invariably be fun. There's a lesson there.

It's actually most likely making money for the Fly Shop--or whatever organization gave your name and address to the magazine. There are organizations that specialize in selling lists from one organization to another. It's the buyer who incurs the cost. Some organizations choose not to sell their lists, for others it's surely a big money maker.

I don't think that's the case here Andrew. This is from the The Fly Shop, the address label says compliments of The Fly Shop. I think what's going on here is Fly Fisherman mag is hoping to pick me up as a subscriber and there's little if any cost to The Fly Shop. I thought I'd just get one issue, like most of the magazines do, and that'd be it.
Now catalogs on the other hand - there I know my name has been circulated. I think that's where the real money has been made by people who sell clients information. I can live with the catalogs it's the cold calls that drive me CRAZY!!!
