ISE San Mateo 17 Years, 9 Months ago
SUCKS

Spent a total of 2 (whole) hours at the show on Sat...the best part of the show (as always) was talking with folks I know...the other 20 minutes was spent walking around...didn't touch a rod, didn't see any tying material worth looking at, and really didn't want to invest in an IRA or buy a cell phone cover.

SNOW WILL BE 10' DEEP IN THE S/W CORNER OF HELL BEFORE I GO TO ANOTHER ISE!

Re:ISE San Mateo 17 Years, 9 Months ago
Paul----As you well know, San Mateo's ISE's Fly Fishing Hall at one time was "the" place to visit for fly anglers. Sadly, it changed near the end of the '90's; when there was a change of mananagement and marketing focus. There was a niche to be filled and The Fly Fishing Show, thus far, has filled it. I both visited and had booths at the ISE for years. I bailed relative to having a booth display there (approximately 1987-2001) when things changed, as both visitors and booth-displayers have.

The fact that Ed Rice is being inducted into the NCCFFF Hall of Fame dinner in February may be testament to Rice's vision of providing a great venue for the increase in fly fishing in the '80's and '90's. It was a good ride with lots of fun & camaraderie...no more.

I love talking fly-fishing. So, if you want some info on fly angling my "home waters" in the Truckee area, do not hesitate to contact me off the board; whether by phone (530-587-7333) or e-mail (cyberfly@cyberfly.com). Please be patient relative to a quick reply; most especially during May-October.

My latest crusade is limiting undo fly fishing guide impact on the Little Truckee River. This small venue is being abused my commericial guiding interests. Consequently the fishery is being abused, IMO, most especially by guides to the detriment of the fishery. Moderation is the key in usage.

During the last two seasons I've diplomatically mentioned to many guides that they should coordinate with others guides so that they minimize impact...it has been to no avail. Some entities are more guilty than others; weather independent or "stabled" (outfitter or fly shop). So I've just started taking this public. Any civil suggestions/comments on limiting guide impact would be appreciated.

NOW FOR THE SPAM!!

Simply, I'm a fly fishing junkie. In 1984, in order to justify my addiction, I started Thy Rod & Staff in Truckee; the longest existing, fly fishing guide service in the Tahoe area and possibly one of the longest in California. I'm an independent; so the "buck stops with me". I tailor trips to the specific desires and skill levels of the client; no "my way or the highway" guiding.

Simply, experience counts folks! 2009 will be my 26th year exclusively as a professional fly fishing guide in Truckee. As long as I enjoying the interaction with other passionate fly anglers and/or those new to the sport; my service will continue into the future. I also "host" fly fishing club outings.

Encouraged by clients & family I started the Reel School of Fly Fishing in 1996. There are scheduled one & two-day clinics through-out the "general" season; entailing a maximum 3-to-1 attendee-to-instructor ratio. Now, since the season if open year-round; I have a scheduled snow-shoe/fly fishing group-outing during March.

Again in 2010 I will be "hosting" two groups at a private lodge in Chilean Patagonia; located 2+hours from Coyhaique, Chile. The lodge accommodates six (6) fly anglers only. It is located in an isolated river valley (40 minute jet-boat ride down river...no roads). From my past experience in this area, I'm guessing it is like Montana was 50-60 years ago....far-far-away from the "real world". Inquire for specifics, I will be going there every year. I've arranged with the lodge for some incredible pricing for two "hosted" weeks in 2010. Also I can arrange other stays and special pricing...contact me.

Thanks for the update - going to save my time (and money) for the Fly Fishing show...we haven't had a tailgater in a while - might be a good time to have one.

Exactly right Frank... 17 Years, 9 Months ago
...from the look of the booths in the now only 2 partially used halls (many gaps, unfilled booths, booths filled with non-outdoor's sporting goods associated vendors)and lack of attendees (remember the weekend days when folks couldn't move in the aisles?) some marketing genius in the ISE organization may be considering his/her professional career options after the ISE.

I worked the entire show in FFF Booths, Manufacturer's Booths, a Lodge Booth, and Retail Booths for over 10 years when the show was in San Mateo, 3 years at the Moscone Center in SF, and then back in San Mateo...this year's effort by the ISE staff provided less of an experience than the 1st show I attended in 1978.

Thanks for making me feel better. I skipped the 7 hr. round trip drive. I've never been to the FFS. Is it worth the trip?

Re:ISE San Mateo 17 Years, 9 Months ago
and thanks for making me feel better as well. Ned and I were going to swing by the ISE on our way south from Mt Shasta, but decided to stop and fish two hours in Redding instead. Sounds like five hookups and no fish was a better decision than the ISE.

Gonna try to make the Fly Fishing show in where ever

Re:ISE San Mateo 17 Years, 9 Months ago
I tied flies for three days at the ISE. On the positive side, they moved all of the fly tyers out onto the main floor, along with the fly tying theater. With fewer vendors, they had room! Much better setup than past years. And being on the main floor, a lot more traffic by the tying table. However, there were minimal fly fishing vendors at the show. Zero fly tying materials and a dissapointment to attend solely relating to fly fishing. If you're a fly tyer, it was a great chance to talk one on one with some of the best fly tyers going. The tying activities were going full steam all show. I had the good fortune to sit next to Bob Clouser one day and Dan Blanton the next. Listening to both was magical for all of the expertise they bring to our sport. I also spent some time soliciting many of my peers to represent some of their favorite patterns for our fly of the month feature here on the NCFFB. I have a number of commitments and we should see some very innovative patterns over the next number of months. Stay tuned!

Hopefully AFTA will do a few shows in california. I just got back from the Denver AFTA show (not FFS) and it was the best I'd been to in a few years.

Stay inside... never go fishing especially during winter... it sucks... don't go... There are definately no Steelhead in California rivers... You might as well go to Oregon.

I wonder.... 17 Years, 9 Months ago
if the perceived declining interest/attendance is reflective of the current economy, decreased numbers of (aspiring) hunters/fishermen or what? I used to go to one every year but haven't been to one for a few years...

Re:ISE San Mateo 17 Years, 9 Months ago
Paul----Yeah, I remember the week-end crowds. If you were manning a booth you'd have to plan in advance when you were going to the restroom...movement in the isles was very slow. Or wait for an opening in the crowds...then dash, and hoped there were no lines at the urinals!

Interesting you mention 1978...That was, if I recall, the ISE's first year(?)in San Mateo. Reason why I remember the year is because that is when I purchased my first numbered print from Mike Stidham; his first, a golden trout. That year I commissioned him to do an original water-color; McCloud River Rainbows. I sent him slides. He delivered it to me the next year and image-size is 18 X 24. I last saw Mike at the Denver Fly Fishing Retailer Show about 7-8 years ago. He mentioned that the $225 (framed & matted!!)I paid for the original in '79 was worth lots more ($3000-4000!).

Yes, the ISE shows were great and lots of fun.

I enjojed the ISE show- got to meet Phil, picked Dan Blanton's brain and saw his delta slide show, got a few minutes to talk with Bob Clouser, and introduced myself to a couple guys I had only talked to by phone. The show was a lot smaller than before and I didn't need a kayak or a stuffed giraffe so I got out of there cheap.

Plus, I got a nice cell phone holder for $15 and a nine dollar beer.

Re:ISE San Mateo 17 Years, 9 Months ago
Paul I tend to agree with you on the larger issue of the show degrading some. I be there is going to be a bigger turnout of booths and sellers at the Sac ISE. I think the halls are pretty limited at San Mateo.

I went on Thursday afternoon with my friend John. We wanted to see UC and spent some time with him. Watched his fly tying presentation and learned a lot from him. We walked the whole show and like you never touched a rod or a reel. We did however look at a lot of the kayaks and the Dave Scadden Pontoon boats.

I have come to the conclusion that either I own all I need nowadays or there is not all that much out there that I can't live without anymore. Now if you were to ask she would tell you that I crossed that line a long time ago

I think I focused more on talking about some destination fishing and planning my next family vacation which might incorporate linking up with a good friend and his family and doing some joint activities with our combined families - with less focus on the flyfishing.

I am interested in seeing the Fly Fish only show at the Alameda county Fairgrounds.

Went Thursday also to beat the crowds. It worked! Seems the ISE and Fly shows is the only place I see you anymore.
