Carp advice needed 17 Years, 9 Months ago
I've decided to try FFing for ol' rubber lips while waiting for the next ice age to bring steelhead to Arizona.

To shorten the learning curve, I'd like to get a book on the subject.

Any recommendations?

A steelhead fly fisherman needs two qualities:
A strong casting arm and a room temperature IQ.

Carp on the Fly, by Barry Reynolds, Brad Befus, and John Berryman. Good info, and fun to read, too.

Found it at Cabelas, with some flies too.

Searched a bit on line and found some more info. Sounds like these puppies are as difficult to hook as steelhead!

Hey Bruce
You may want to check out www.kernriverflyfishing.com There are a bunch of guys on that board that chase carp and they have a section devoted just to it. You'll find a lot of good information there.
Have a happy new year
Matt

I've not tried for them yet, but I have a couple of friends that have.

Apparently, other than their extreme skittishness, the biggest difficulty in landing them is their very soft lips. It is very easy to rip the hook out if you put too much pressure on them, and being a strong fighting fish makes that a difficult task!

Good luck,

Buzz

Sounds like this is one situation where I shouldn't mash down my barbs!

We used to catch 'em outside of Philly with cornmeal. I figure with a fly rod I might have to chum 'em up a bit. That doesn't bother me!
