Rod's done! - pics added 14 Years, 7 Months ago

Christiaan finished his rod today. As can be expected from an 11 y.o. Rod builder, there are a few "custom" touches, such as bumps in the finish, asymmetrical guide wraps, etc. Still, it came out rather nicely, and most importantly he can say that HE made it!

You know it is a thing of beauty that he will enjoy using every time he goes fishing. Good on him and I hope there are many more in his future!!! I kind of remember my first build but it's really fuzzy, a good thing considering it was over 50 years ago and before all the good finishing products, etc, that are available today...but I was sure proud of that rod so I can relate you your son's accomplishment!!!

Thanks Charlie,
Christiaan's build was a bit fuzzy, too, but a second coat of finish took care of that.
Next project (for me)... completing two 7/8wts (for my brother & me)... that I started ~10 years ago.

Same here. Plus, he built up the grip himself... Can you tell I'm a proud papa?
BTW, Ed, there's a chance (slim, but within the realm of possibility) that we'll be getting a little weekend place in the N. Big Sur area sometime in the next year. If so, I'll be expecting you to show us all the hot fishin' holes

Chuck,
Well, there's good news and bad news about the fishing around here.
The good news is that the places where you have any decent chance of catching trout [or other freshwater fish] are seldom crowded.
The bad news is that the reason is that most of them require at least an hour of hard hiking to get to. There is essentially no public fresh water open for fishing that has easy access. Glad to pass on what I know.
There is LOTS of ocean.
Stay in touch!!

Yeah, I know... I remember your reports from back in the day. I'm up for hard hikin' for some 5-inchers. And the boy's only 11 so he's got no excuse. Plus, he can carry my lunch.

Well, that's the idea. Here in Redwood City, options are limited. But Christiaan has presidents week off, so we may make a day trip to the Lower Stan...

Hi Harry in HI!
Believe it or. Not, I still have your "coffee bean" fly from that first (or second?) fly swap... Sadly, though, I no longer have the actual bean dropper. IIRC, I ground it and made a very weak cup of coffee...
Aloha,
