Wow, did you actually do that? I'd love to chat with you about it sometime. Many years back when the obsession was trekking and climbing (and fly fishing just a twinkle in my eye), I spent some time along the Urubamba. It was running heavy chocolate color when I was there and I couldn't imagine a trout being in there.

Up in the Cordillera Blanca I fished a tiny lake near our base camp and couldn't keep the trout off a spinner. I was so proud to bring back a bunch of dinner fish for our group of seven, but get this -- a native had just been by and sold them a bunch of trout!

Yeah, Peru is fine. I've spent quite a bit of time fishing all over that place and my daughter lived in Cuzco for awhile which helped. Like anywhere else in the world, it is changing rapidly and you should go sooner than later. You MAY catch massive fish, but your trip will NOT be measured by big fish but instead by huge memories of cool cultural encounters, wild ecosystems, and general cerebral melting sensory overload. Fishing at its best, even if you get skunked.

But that is just so I could see my family there!

I think Argentina would be my first choice because it is affordable and I could Tango in Buenos Aires too!

I have indeed made three trips down there to find some fine fish and good times, and have written three "articles" about the area that might be useful to fishing travellers. For a while I was thinking of trying publish them, but then saw the madness of those thoughts. "Let's see, I found a cheap and uncomplicated way to fish completely uncrowded quality water, and I want to put it in a magazine? NOT! But if anyone from the board is headed down, please do PM or mail me and I will be glad to share some information. Hope to actually see some of you down there and share some of the wide open waters of Patagonia, where the Argentines actually have a law that you have to give other fishers a full 100M of space. Not that anyone down there pays attention to laws, though
