Gillnetting on the Klamath & Trinity Rivers 15 Years, 10 Months ago
I just read Phil's forward (10/27/09) of an excerpt from the "Hot Sheet" from his friend Mike Aughney.

Here are my questions:

1---Are steelhead on the two watersheds being as efficiently netted as the salmon?

2---If not, why? Are the nets made specifically for salmon?

2---Is the "Hot Sheet special interest pub? If so, whom?

I love talking fly-fishing. So, if you want some info on fly angling my "home waters" in the Truckee area, do not hesitate to contact me off the board; whether by phone (530-587-7333) or e-mail (cyberfly@cyberfly.com). Please be patient relative to a quick reply; most especially during May-October.

My latest crusade is limiting undo fly fishing guide impact on the Little Truckee River. This small venue is being abused my commericial guiding interests. Consequently the fishery is being abused, IMO, most especially by guides to the detriment of the fishery. Moderation is the key in usage.

During the last two seasons I've diplomatically mentioned to many guides that they should coordinate with others guides so that they minimize impact...it has been to no avail. Some entities are more guilty than others; weather independent or "stabled" (outfitter or fly shop). So I've just started taking this public. Any civil suggestions/comments on limiting guide impact would be appreciated.

Simply, I'm a fly fishing junkie. In 1984, in order to justify my addiction, I started Thy Rod & Staff in Truckee; the longest existing, fly fishing guide service in the Tahoe area and possibly one of the longest in California. I'm an independent; so the "buck stops with me". I tailor trips to the specific desires and skill levels of the client; no "my way or the highway" guiding.

Simply, experience counts folks! 2009 will be my 26th year exclusively as a professional fly fishing guide in Truckee. As long as I enjoying the interaction with other passionate fly anglers and/or those new to the sport; my service will continue into the future. I also "host" fly fishing club outings.

Encouraged by clients & family I started the Reel School of Fly Fishing in 1996. There are scheduled one & two-day clinics through-out the "general" season; entailing a maximum 3-to-1 attendee-to-instructor ratio. Now, since the season if open year-round; I have a scheduled snow-shoe/fly fishing group-outing during March.

Again in 2010 I will be "hosting" two groups at a private lodge in Chilean Patagonia; located 2+hours from Coyhaique, Chile. The lodge accommodates six (6) fly anglers only. It is located in an isolated river valley (40 minute jet-boat ride down river...no roads). From my past experience in this area, I'm guessing it is like Montana was 50-60 years ago....far-far-away from the "real world". Inquire for specifics, I will be going there every year. I've arranged with the lodge for some incredible pricing for two "hosted" weeks in 2010. Also I can arrange other stays and special pricing...contact me.

Frank,

Not sure I can fully answer. Fished the Trinity last weekend with a couple of guides that shared the concern that gillnets were taking more fish than the river can support. Salmon runs are down, steelhead runs are down from two years ago. There is a significent concern that many returning salmon, and steelhead are being taken in the nets. At this time there is not good data to measure the impact. I do know I landed two steelhead last weekend, and one had net scars. The runs are much below two years ago......normal cycle, or artificial impact? Don't know the answer, just sharing the concern.

Re:Gillnetting on the Klamath & Trinity Rivers 15 Years, 10 Months ago
Phil----OK, thanks. Last year we hooked and intentionally broke-off some huge salmon...guessing in the 20-30# range. We guessed Chinooks. In the past we've caught smaller ones in the 5-8 pound range...Silvers or jack Kings?

Not sure exactly how the nets work; but (I'm hoping) they let the smaller (girth & head-wise) go through without gilling them. Hopeful thinking?

Troutnut----Thanks, I read the article in the Searchlight and 3-5 of the comments. There are lots more comments; I didn't read them. Good thing, maybe my blood would elevate. Minimally I'm encouraged in that the article did mention that the gillnets can only span 1/3 of the river...whatever that may be of worth since they are likely placed in the best place to block passage.

I still haven't got answers of what is done with the steelhead caught in the nets. Can they be put back in the water...alive?...assuming they survive the netting.

I've never seen a live fish (at least one that will live for any length of time) removed from such a net. Count them ALL as killed.

I think they just kill them all and let the spirits sort it out. 400 to 700 salmon a year??? How much can you eat? I call that GREED or Avarice. Maybe those words aren't in the Hoopa and Yurok language.

I have seen the nets near the mouth of the Klamath, and those nets capture jack salmon as well as adults, so unless steelhead are so much smarter than a King Salmon to avoid the nets, I don't see how they can't capture steelhead. The struggle to escape does what it does.

Re:Gillnetting on the Klamath & Trinity Rivers 15 Years, 10 Months ago
Gill netting is horrible... it is bad... I think we can all agree on that. With the runs so weak, they are likely having an effect beyond what is reasonable.

Just have to throw out that the idea of these people being greedy is a bit off. I'd peg them more as desperate. These are POOR places... Johnsons has to be one of the poorest places I've ever seen in the US and I recall a story in a newspaper a few years back that said some of the native Americans in this area don't have power or plumbing. CA unemployment is high, but how high do you think it is for a Karuk or Yurok? The Salmon are all those folks have, which may be blinding them to the impact of the nets.

I don't want to debate gill netting... I'm opposed to it all the way. Just trying to make the point that you have to come up with another option for these people... you can't just say "don't gill net" without offering them something to replace it (and Casino's don't work everywhere). Know what I mean?

Watch the video it will make you sick. This is how they net the rivers up here. Talk about raping the rescource.

1---Are steelhead on the two watersheds being as efficiently netted as the salmon? no

2---If not, why? Are the nets made specifically for salmon? The nets have size restrictions so that they only net Chinooks. They aren't supposed to be targeting the coho or steelhead. There is some incidental take but not as much you may think

2---Is the "Hot Sheet special interest pub? If so, whom?

I can't see what Shawn posted, but I can imagine. He has a very different perspective of Indian nets in Washington. Very WEALTHY tribes net the crap out of the rivers up there.

But I'll say this, being poor or a uber-wealthy multi billionaire does NOT give the right to destroy a salmon run. If Buffet and PacificCorp was doing the netting you and FOR would be sueing the crap out of them.

I'm gonna come across as the "racist", but their poverty is their own fault. God gives every person the gifts to become a prosperous human being and a benefit to society, and hiding their lack of achievement behind skin color in this day and age is B.S. One of the wealthiest and most fulfilled people I know is a Paiute Indian
(and he didn't get it running a casino). It is their tribal culture that keeps them poor.

400 to 700 KING SALMON!!! Keep saying it OVER AND OVER. That's just ONE GUY, and what he admits to netting. Even if they only weighed 6 lb each ( instead of 20+) a person could easily get 2 lbs of meat from each fish. That's 800+lbs of meat! Say they get 10lbs per fish which is more realistic, that is 2 TONS of SALMON MEAT. For personal subsistence? Tribal customs? Even if you shared it with all your neighbors I couldn't give away 2 tons of meat! Plain old greed. Simple and pure. Satan has a firm hand on them. Until the Tribes change their ways, I will never support any of their businesses. I pass right on by ALL the tribal stores and gas stations in the Klamath/Crescent City area, and you will never see my shadow in an Indian Casino.

I don't like to eat many fish species (taste/texture/smell), but I don't like being forced into eating garbage fish (tilapia/Chileian Sea Bass...) because greedy people have destroyed fishery stocks. What's next, CARP FILLETS?
