Back on the Lower Sac Again!!! 15 Years, 11 Months ago

|
I have been on the Lower Sac three times this week. I have forgotten how different the guiding aspect is out here in California as compared to Idaho. A lot different when you are fishing with indicators as compared to little dry flies floating down the bank. The other thing that I had forgotten was how hot these Lower Sac rainbows are. We are so lucky to have such a huge resource and such a phenomenal fishery as the Lower Sac. I am positive if you tied a line between a Lower Sac rainbow and a South Fork of the Snake fish then the Lower Sac fish would drag the Snake trout up and down the river.
Anyhow.....back to the fishing. The upper part of the Lower Sac from Posse down to Anderson was really good. Each of the days we were hooking 40+ rainbows. The first day they were all over rubberlegs and caddis. While the other couple of days the hot bugs were pheasant tails, caddis pupahs, and micro mays. These fish on the upper drift have gotten fat and strong this summer. All of those Lower Sac bows look like little fat footballs. Pretty darn impressive.
The word on the Lower Drifts is that the fishing has been pretty tough. Most days as of this week guys were catching between 15-20 trout. A few steelhead are starting to show up but not in any great numbers yet.
Expect the fishing on the Lower Sac to just keeping improving over the next six weeks.
I hope you are all getting some fishing in.

Here we go again. And it was such a nice quiet summer.
Can't you give it a rest ?? It's the SAME OLD THING EVERYTIME YOU POST. Do you have a template you just change a few words here and there and hit send ? Then copy/paste verbatim to other boards ?
People know the Lower Sac is a good fishery.
They know the 'bows are hot. They know the average is 16-17".
They know they eat caddis, mayflies, and stones. They also know the egg bite will start in a few weeks.
Take a look around at EVERY bulletin board that focuses on N.Cal.
How many other guides post anything, much less - "Yeah, another day with 50 fish landed". ZERO.
Two reasons..... 1 - spam is not appreciated in BB communities. 2 - most guides are not trying to prove something to themselves or others by posting results every day.
Move on or create your own www.imthegreatestguideheresmydailyfishingreport.com webpage so you can look at it as much as you want.

is it spam, and the same old thing every time, but it's just plain bad business practice.
Ponder this....
Think about "Tom" the guide from out of town.
He doesn't make it up here much, but gets a few trips a month.
So, he might not be hooking 50+ fish every day like you.
So, he busts his butt all day, shows his clients a great day, teaches them some great skills, but they only hook 28 fish.
Well, those clients have been reading 'reports' on 'some board' on the internet that says people are hooking 50 fish a day. They only got 28 (great day anywhere)....so they're not happy. They expected much more. Tom's tip isn't that great now. And they might not come back to Tom.
Don't expect "Tom" to think very highly of you, Ryan.
It's just common business sense.
You wanna post reports to boost your ego or whatever you're doing, fine. Leave the numbers out.
Respect the other guys in the business.

Gentlepersons,
I don't get up to Redding much at this time of year, but I do have a trip coming up.
I enjoy reading RJ's posts, even if they are [possibly] a little inflated. I support his right to post fishing reports on this board or any other board. They give me hope!!! I never expect to catch 50 fish, even with Dirty Ernie. I MIGHT, but I don't EXPECT it, and most fisherman you'd rather book again than not don't EXPECT it, either.
I also support Shane's right to object to the posts, although a bit less acrimoniously might be useful.
I have never enjoyed anyone bashing on small independent guide operations, whether it's Sac River Outfitters, RJS Fly Trips or even the infamous Jack Trout. I especially don't enjoy it when the basher works for a very large and successful outfitter. I always wonder - does that fact have anything to do with the bashing?? mebbe not......
Objections to perceived spam are fine, but when you start getting personal, at least post as The Keeper of the Dark or something.....
or if you are trying to help out a new guide, TAKE IT OFF THE BOARD. Don't be giving away all your business secrets here in public.....

I have been giving this a lot of thought before I post something on the board. It is obvious that certain people don't like me on the board. That is okay. Throughout life there are always going to be run ins. As I continue to post I am sure that people will try to break me down but I think I should clear something up.
The one thing that I would like to say is that I always tell the truth. I hold myself to a high Christian standard and try to live a life with a high ethical standard. Never once have I inflated my numbers. I tell it like it is. If the fish was 20" it was not 22". If I hooked 10 rainbows then it was 10. If I get 50 then it is 50. Anyone who knows me can tell you that there is no BS in my boat. The reason I use numbers is so that people can have a feel of how good the fishing actually is. If someone doesn't know a lot about a certain river then they can go when the fishing is really good and expect to catch a few fish. If this makes someone look bad then then I am sorry. If I am telling the truth then there is no harm in that.
Thanks for listening. I hope you are all getting some good fishing in. It sounds like the Lower Sac is now fishable again. I will be out there this week after spending the weekend on the Yuba.

SD---I agree with some of the things you've said. I've been in this trade as an independent fly fishing guide in the Truckee area for a long-time. IMO, RJSFLYTRIPS should heed some of you're advice. Some of it is very valid; most especially in your comments about false expectations and disatisfied clients. Unfullfilled, lofty expectations from a prospective client...can result in dissatisfied clients, resulting in no repeat business or referrals.
Yes, again IMO, his posts are blatant spams. RJSFYTRIPS is a realtively a new guide; he may be following an aggressive marketing gameplan (...from his site he is studying for his MBA) that he thinks may work. It very feasibly may work to fill his calendar; but the caveat is that he is setting himself-up to perform. If he doesn't and has a "slow" day of less, say 20 fish, to the boat...he may have an unhappy client...he'll learn.
In the interim I wish him success, he seems like a sincere and well-meaning individual.
RJSFLYTRIPS---A personal piece of advice from me, so please take it for what it is worth:
I saw your "$100 discount" offer on another board; this can come back to bite you. Most especially if others you've booked around your proffered date find out about the discount. You can be setting yourself-up for un-intended consequences.

I love talking fly-fishing. So, if you want some info on fly angling my "home waters" in the Truckee area, do not hesitate to contact me off the board; whether by phone (530-587-7333) or e-mail (cyberfly@cyberfly.com). Please be patient relative to a quick reply; most especially during May-October.
My latest crusade is limiting undo fly fishing guide impact on the Little Truckee River. This small venue is being abused my commericial guiding interests. Consequently the fishery is being abused, IMO, most especially by guides to the detriment of the fishery. Moderation is the key in usage.
During the last two seasons I've diplomatically mentioned to many guides that they should coordinate with others guides so that they minimize impact...it has been to no avail. Some entities are more guilty than others; weather independent or "stabled" (outfitter or fly shop). So I've just started taking this public. Any civil suggestions/comments on limiting guide impact would be appreciated.
For my complete bio go to www.cyberlfy.com; then click-on my photo.
NOW FOR THE SPAM!!
Simply, I'm a fly fishing junkie. In 1984, in order to justify my addiction, I started Thy Rod & Staff in Truckee; the longest existing, fly fishing guide service in the Tahoe area and possibly one of the longest in California. I'm an independent; so the "buck stops with me". I tailor trips to the specific desires and skill levels of the client; no "my way or the highway" guiding.
Simply, experience counts folks! 2009 will be my 26th year exclusively as a professional fly fishing guide in Truckee. As long as I enjoying the interaction with other passionate fly anglers and/or those new to the sport; my service will continue into the future. I also "host" fly fishing club outings.
Encouraged by clients & family I started the Reel School of Fly Fishing in 1996. There are scheduled one & two-day clinics through-out the "general" season; entailing a maximum 3-to-1 attendee-to-instructor ratio. Now, since the season if open year-round; I have a scheduled snow-shoe/fly fishing group-outing during March.
Again in 2010 I will be "hosting" two groups at a private lodge in Chilean Patagonia; located 2+hours from Coyhaique, Chile. The lodge accommodates six (6) fly anglers only. It is located in an isolated river valley (40 minute jet-boat ride down river...no roads). From my past experience in this area, I'm guessing it is like Montana was 50-60 years ago....far-far-away from the "real world". Inquire for specifics, I will be going there every year. I've arranged with the lodge for some incredible pricing for two "hosted" weeks in 2010. Also I can arrange other stays and special pricing...contact me.
