Dood,
A year ago I moved within a mile of a nice river and started fishing everyday. Soon I left my rod together and ditched the chest pack. All I take now is a line wih my clips, tippet, and foreceps around my neck. I still throw my fly box in my waders, or shirt pocket if its wet wading time, and an extra leader or indicators fits in your pocket easy.
One key to this is all I use for weight is gremelins weights in the BB size. Super soft so I can pull them off and re-use them, plus I don't have to clamp them down to stay put. So a little pouch of those and I'm all set.
I will wear a backback for a full day on the river to take beers and food.
