Sierra report 17 Years, 7 Months ago
Took a little vacation and hit a few streams I'd never fished before. North Fork Yuba, where I caught a half dozen or so fish on the first day. Spent two nights at Herrington's in Sierra City, which was nice. Walked down to the river late both afternoons hoping for some October caddis activity. There were a few fluttering, dipping into the water, but I never saw a fish rise. Actually over the three days I think I saw one fish rise all told. Most fish were caught on standard attractor patterns--caddis, parachute adams, trude. Second day I went and checked out Haypress Creek around Wild Plum campground. Was actually heading up to Milton Creek, got waylaid. Found a really nice deep pool, actually several nice deep pools. Hardly anything more fun than watching a fish zoom from the bottom of the pool to take a dry. Very few fish of much size, but I was fishing with a 2 weight, and it was fun. Made my way back down then fished up a couple of hours from the campground road. Lots of nice shelves and pools, each holding a few fish. Once again saw a few October caddis, even tied on something to imitate. Fish rose but few were big enough to get the fly in their mouth. Checked out the NF Yuba again late that afternoon below Herrington's, same situation as the night before. Headed over to Truckee the next day, with some great info from Frank Pisciotta, but kind of stunk it up. First I stopped in Truckee to stock up on the flies Frank recommended, but the fly shop is closed for winter, I guess. Wind was up a bit, checked out a couple of spots on the Truckee, then the Little Truckee. Actually felt like I was fishing pretty well, loved where I was in general, but no catching. Headed out of town yesterday morning. Frank, thanks for the tips, didn't quite know where you were, so I winged it. Beautiful up there, though. Great colors, nice weather, just a good trip all around.
