Here goes. Total honesty, but no spots and no numbers.
The T is damned tough right now. I just got back from 10 days of fishing, and found it the toughest going since I was a guppy fly fisher. Yes, I caught some fish, more than most and less than some, but in the past I've had days where I caught more than I did in those 10. True, we've been a bit spoiled by the runs of 2006 and 2007, but 2008 was a return to the norm, and even though counts show that there are fish in the system, I found this year much less productive than last year.
Maybe it's the low releases from the dam or maybe it's the lack of rain. Whatever it is, unless you're a hardcore steelheader, I wouldn't plan too much time on the T unless conditions change in some fashion. I'm heading back up this weekend, but I'm the kind of metalhead who just loves the abuse. I'll be at the Motel Trinity in Weaverville, but not on the weekends, until Dec. 18. Stop by and say hi if you're around.
