Gill netting is horrible... it is bad... I think we can all agree on that. With the runs so weak, they are likely having an effect beyond what is reasonable.
Just have to throw out that the idea of these people being greedy is a bit off. I'd peg them more as desperate. These are POOR places... Johnsons has to be one of the poorest places I've ever seen in the US and I recall a story in a newspaper a few years back that said some of the native Americans in this area don't have power or plumbing. CA unemployment is high, but how high do you think it is for a Karuk or Yurok? The Salmon are all those folks have, which may be blinding them to the impact of the nets.
I don't want to debate gill netting... I'm opposed to it all the way. Just trying to make the point that you have to come up with another option for these people... you can't just say "don't gill net" without offering them something to replace it (and Casino's don't work everywhere). Know what I mean?
