Sage FLi vs. Loomis East Fork 3 wt. Question 17 Years, 11 Months ago

Since there's no place within 200 miles where I might find both rods to cast, I'll post the question here to start off my search for a new 3 wt., 4 pc., 8 1/2' rod.
Both are fast, which is what I'm looking for.
Any reviews will be appreciated.

Instead of landing 30 or 40 fish a day, I'd be able to play a single fish for an hour and a half. Think of all the sore mouths that will be spared!
Okay, actually I'm hiking into the Wind River Mountains of Wyoming at the end of June in search of 20" goldens, brookies and cuts. With all this feedback I've gotten  , I think I've been convinced to go with the Sage rod which is $100 cheaper. |

Go with something slower like a sage SLT, sheesh.

Bruce: Contact Pappy at Calwestrods. He can build you a perfect 9 ft, 4 pc, 3wt on an FT blank that will just thrill you.

Built the FT 9 foot 3 wt for float tubing smaller lakes. If you are looking for a fast 3 wt it is a sweet blank. Very fast. Not for small creeks but if it's windy or you are pulling a streamer in a tube it is great. I can't cast for #^#^@ but even I can toss some line with this puppy.

1. I don't think Pappy would like me to contact him about anything.
2. The problem with having a rod made by someone else is if it breaks, the rod company replaces the blank and then the rod or section has to be rebuilt. I broke a Sage 8 wt. VPS-III that a guy in my fly club had built for me. They sent him a replacement section, but he had to wrap the guides and rebuild that section. If he had died, I'd be stuck with a blank.
Let me know if I'm under the wrong impression.

Here's my situation: I'll be hiking for 10 miles at a high elevation to reach glacial lakes at close to 11,000 feet. The trout will average 15"-18" with a possible 24 incher. There will be a lot of lake fishing from shore and some streams wide enough not to be able to cast across. Due to the fact that I want to keep my pack weight low, I won't have waders or a boat of any kind.
I have an Orvis TLS Mid-flex 8'4" 4 pc rod, but I want to bring a second 3 wt. rod in case I break the Orvis. I also want to spend $200 - $400, no more.
I was thinking that a fast rod might have more backbone to land a large fish, might be easier to cast a bit farther on the lakes and would be better if the wind kicks up. I also figure that an 8 1/2 footer would be better than a shorter rod.
Any advice would be appreciated.

You need a 3wt for that? Why not use a 5wt?

Casting a light line for distance isn't easy. It takes a lot more skill then with heavier lines. No matter how fast the rod is you'll never be able to cast a 3wt for distance unless you have the skill to do it. A heavier weight line will be easier for long casts.

You'll never be able to cast a 3wt into a strong wind. 3wt's and wind don't mix. It doesn't matter how stiff the rods is. Try throwing a styrofoam cup into a fan to get an idea of what I mean. If it's windy you should go with something heavier. I'm still puzzled... Why do you want to fish for big trout on a windy lake with a 3wt??? What kind of flies are you going to be using? Buggers and stuff like that? Bigger flies are easier to turn over with a heavier line size as well....

Huh? Why, is that guy the only rod builder that knows how to wrap thread around a VPS blank?
