Sierra Backpack Trip 17 Years, 11 Months ago
This is my first post on the revamped board. With the arrival of my third child just over a year ago I have not had many trip reports or questions to write about although I have been a pretty regular lurker.
It looks like my buddy and I will be able to get away for a week in late summer, August or September, and we are hoping to hike and fish in the Sierra. Over the years I have read some great trip reports on the board and I would love to recreate some of those adventures. I am not asking for any secret spots or great fishing holes, just some info on general areas, trailheads, etc. that help us get the planning process started. We are hoping to spend 5-7 days out and would like to keep the hikes in the 5-7 miles a day range so as to maximize fishing time.
I will be glad to communicate off the board it that is preferable so feel free to contact me. Thanks in advance for any help you might have.

Welcome back, CoffeeGuy!

There are some great choices of backpack locations for such a trip.
What is your level of experience, fitness level, and your expectations as far as fishing, solitude, etc.?

Thanks for your questions. We're both reasonably healthy and fit. We've backpacked and fished a few times over the years and are looking for a bit more adventure and remoteness. The solitude quotient would preferably be high and we are willing to work for it. Of course a nice selection of fishing options is high on the list as well. We're both coming from the bay area (Sonoma & Napa Counties) and would like to be able to drive to a trail head within 4 or 5 hours in order to maximize our time so the southern Sierra is probably out of the running but anything form Yosemite north is doable.

GM, Thanks for the great pictures! We'll take a look at these areas and see if we can make it happen. We're looking at late August or early September, is that a good time?
Thanks again,
Coffee Guy

Yeah, that should be perfect. If you want less crowds you might try October - however you need to keep an eye on the weather.

Yea, but if you are prepared for it, some weather can make for a very memorable trip!
