Tying with dubbing brush 18 Years, 1 Month ago
Hi,

I have a couple of questions for those with experience with tying with dubbing brushes. I'm thinking about giving it a spin

- Is it worthwhile over a standard dubbing loop?
- How do you build a tapered body? I imagine its by overlapping wraps. Any hints/tips?
- If using thread in building the dubbing brushes, how do you keep the brushes intact between flies?

Thanks,

Johh

John,
I'll answer your questions from my perspective but realize that others may have a different view.

- Is it worthwhile over a standard dubbing loop?
I only use the brush for larger (Size 12 and up) weighted nymphs (and almost all "Czech" nymphs I tie), I use the loop (usually via a Cal Bird Tool) for other flies and other dubbing methods when necessary.

- How do you build a tapered body? I imagine its by overlapping wraps. Any hints/tips?
Overlapping wraps with a brush built a really big body that was out of proportion when I tried it...so I don't anymore...I use a lead, thread, or if I have to, a floss underbody to establish any taper...I hate working with floss.

- If using thread in building the dubbing brushes, how do you keep the brushes intact between flies?
I really can't help you here with a brush made of thread (I believe that here's a difference between a thread dubbing rope and a wire dubbing brush?), I have only used wire for dubbing brushes however, if I build a 6" to 10" wire dubbing brush, it stays intact between flies and can even be stored in a zip-lock bag.

Have fun,

Paul
