Fly line suggestion 17 Years, 5 Months ago
For as long as I can remember (I started fly fishing 40 years ago) the only fly line I have ever bought is Cortland 444. Good stuff. But I need to replace a couple of lines and I am wondering about which way to go. I have become a Cabelas fan over the years. Fly rods, camping gear, very good service etc. And now I can honestly say they are the "local guys" (Reno). At least this time of year when our other local (in Quincy) fly shop shuts down for the winter. So ..... Can any one give me some insight to the Cabela's Prestige and Prestige Plus lines? They are certainly less expenisve than some of the others. Do they fish as well?

Thanks in advance ofr your opinions,
Michael

I have tried both of those Cabelas lines, and wasn't overly impressed with either one of them (and I buy a ton of stuff from them). But then again I have tried a lot of different lines, and I keep returning to SA XPS lines, so...

I really don't think you can go wrong sticking with the 444 lines.

DG (new name, I revert to TWO posts. Sigh.)

Since I started using Rio Grande lines on my fast rods I won't go to anything else.

Charlie, I like the Rio Grande line a lot, also. Been usin' 'em a long time now. Better than any line out there (for the faster rods.)

I have some great shots of a couple of Bull Elks. They got their antlers tangled up and couldn't get separated. One died...one lived. Had to cut off one antler of the dead one to free the live one. Incredible shots. The surviving Elk is now sporting the dead elks one antler!!!! He was very happy to get free!! I'll send the pics to ya sometime. -berms

i like the Wulff TT line too. One of the best I've tried. I had one before I got into the Grande line. The old Wulff line cracked after a years use. many lines don't last much longer than a year (rio included) and you'll find a crack somewhere in the buisness end. Never used any Cabelas lines. But if it's like any of the other equipment they sell....those lines prolly will work fine for ya. (featherfisher)Buy one and try it out for us!!!!! PS>>>no more loggin in to make a post!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the tip. It troubles me to hear that the lines don't last longer than a year. I thought I fished a lot but perhaps not enough. I am working on that since I retired recently. But I have never replaced a line in a single year. But....my question is what did you mean by "no more logging in to make a post". That just went over my head. (Doesn't take much some times!) Was that about a change in the Board or did I do something weird?

Hey Michael - he just meant that you can be logged out of the site (you can't see profiles and take advantage of other features in that case) but you can still post a message on the board. I think Tim was just making a general comment...nothing in particular to your post.

Berms, I get 250 hours of use out of the business end of a fly line. Which translates into about three lines a year for me. The only lines I have that last a year are the ones I don't use every day. I try real hard to only use DT lines any more, for the sake of my wallet (and they work just fine).
