Pattern variation idea, opinions?????? 17 Years, 6 Months ago
I have an idea for a fly I've been thinking of trying out. Maybe it's been done before but I haven't seen it so it's a new idea to me. Start with your regular birds nest pattern. Wrap the tail and abdomen as you normally would. Now, instead of wrapping the usual mallard flank I'm thinking of trying it with deer hair and then finish the thorax as normal. Basically that's the only difference from the normal pattern.

Opinions?

Most deer hair is slightly hollow, and will cause the fly to float, or not sink that quickly. Which might have an application as a emergent caddis????!!!!

It is really their opinion that matters

I say give it a go, test it out, and let us know what the fish think.

Or maybe appear more natural?! IMHO most nymphs are too heavy, given if you pick up a natural it is lighter (better to put weight on the elsewhere). Of course, it may not make that much of a difference, but....

you will end up with a muddler of sorts, unless you trim like h$%%. Dubbing over trimmed deer hair butts in not easy. Kelly Gallop has a pattern very similar...I will do some looking

here is the bug...it's somewhat close wing wise
One thing ...if you have a deer hair collar all around the fly like on a B Nest, the fly may want to roll on the waters surface in the wind

Nice, but but not exactly what I'm thinking. The deer hair won't really be a wing. I'd be using mostly just the tips in a distribution wrap so finishing the thorax over the butts shouldn't be a problem since I'd not be using very much deer hair. I'll just try one and post a photo.
