I was just reading the catalog... 17 Years, 6 Months ago
How timely. I swear I was just reading the new Orvis catalog on the throne this morning thinking "there is absolutely nothing about this catalog that appeals to me personally."

For instance, on page 16D they are selling a sweatshirt called Montana Morning, a Titanium Chronograph (that looks a lot like a watch to me), and a VOGT Silver Bison Money Clip for $195 that probably doesn't come with the c-note in the picture. I don't relate to any of those things or whatever message they're trying to sell to me.

Now I know some of you Range Rover driving G-4 types out there probably wonder what in the hell I'm talking about. You'd probably even buy that digital stream thermometer for 29.95 on page 60. I know I sure do like hooking fish out from under your guides' boat as he cuts off my beat up old drift boat and low holes me to try get you on some fish on the Trin.

No. I don't have much in common with Orvis. (packs in a big dip and laughs)

I personaly like the "shooting flashes" to be worn below your "english moleskin breeks" or of course the 'shooting stockings", all on page 48 of the sporting gift catalogue. If I ever see someone wearing that crap while hunting I might shoot them myself. Half the crap in there should get any male a leading role in Brokeback Mountain 2.

Jeebus guys, who pissed your cereal? A young man asks for help for a school project and you guys use it to take a moment to try to prove your "regular guy" status by no-so-subtly putting down those who shop at a place you don't like. C'mon.....no hijacking threads with your opinions of Orvis shoppers. That's not what he asked for

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

Over-priced, East Coast, Yuppie, Wanna-Be's 17 Years, 6 Months ago
Everything they sell is twice the price it should be. For that price point, they should serve you lunch and give one on one service, yet they don't. Orvis carters to the East Coasrt and British crowd, in their Range Rovers and Tweed Jackets, and they have a false sense of things "western".

That being said, they do come up with most of the inovative products in the outdoor sports industry.Orvis is also responsible for the most useless JUNK to enter the field too!

My treasured Orvis flytying pattern book, in its 3 ring binder that looked like a Betty Crocker cookbook, has been with me for nearly 30 years. Orvis popularized "dog beds", fatwood, Tweed jackets and Chino pants.

I hold them personally responsible for the inflated prices of the flyfishing industry.

I love their motto, MORE IS MORE!

A steelhead fly fisherman needs two qualities:
A strong casting arm and a room temperature IQ.

Nice, i have a fishing neighbor!! you should come in the sf store and see me, or stop by I dont have too many fishing buddies in the city. I am currently working in the Orvis store in sf. What do you mean we dont know what we are talking about...hahha jk No offense takin my guess is you havent been in since I have started. come in on any day but monday or wednesday and have a sit down. I would love to hear your thoughts about our current products. Give me a call 5302093108.

George.... shame on you and your ego . The SF store has plenty of knowledgeable fisherman and have been well staffed for a good 6 months now. We did have a lull since Micah left and it's taken a while to get fly bins refilled, etc... but we're back up and rollin!!! We just started stocking Montana Fly, Rainy's, Outcast/Fishcat, Umpqua and soon to be carrying Simms and Patagonia. We're constantly growing our fly tying department and can order most any material you might be looking for. Come in on Thursdays for free tying lessons with Chuck Anthony. Chucks in from 12-7 and will be working on Steelhead flies all month.

Sorry for the rant.. just had to give you all an update on the store.

good fishin!

George,

I've been following this with interest. No particular prejudice, but my nearest Orvis Store is about 5 gallons away.

I do have to wonder though what you think this article says about support of existing customers:

Just wondering....

I'll be in SFO tomorrow. You working?
