Took a mental health day, and reports indicated the Yuba was okay. Nice day up there, not too windy, comfortable temperature. There were enough bugs around, and I found a nice hole that I like not too far from the bridge that was empty all day, and I cycled through it for a couple of hours. There were some nice fish rising, the kind that make you say, "Holy crap, that was a big fish." I got three to take on caddis emergers, since they didn't seem to be keying on anything on the surface. I think the longest I had any of them on was about 8 seconds. In all the places I've fished I don't think there's anything that compares to a take-and-run on the Yuba. Each fish was tearing off line, went straight for fast water, and either unbuttoned or snapped off the fly. I think I paid the price for fishing with a four weight. Or I tied crap knots. Or I was incompetent. Nah, they were just awesome fish. Pretty fun day, excellent for the first day out this year, and it's always fun to get fish to rise on the Yuba.
