My wife had the same concern as I like to take off and fish on my own. After thinking about it I decided that I was approaching the age(well over 65) when a minor incident on a stream could turn into a problem of major proportions. After looking at the options I wound up purchasing a satellite messenger called SPOT. With SPOT I'm able to send my wife a check in cell phone text message and an e-mail with my precise location. The text message gives my lat/long while the e-mail provides a link to Google maps with my postion shown on the satelite map. In addition to the ok message I also have the option of sneding a help request message (such as when I'm out of gas, stuck in the mud, etc.) and an emergency message to 911 for serious help.
The device works anywhere I can get a gps fix so it doesn't rely on cell towers, etc. My wife is now much more comfortable with me being out by myself and I have the peace of mind knowing that if something goes wrong I can get the type of help I need.
You can check the device out at findmespot.com
