The Northern California Fly Fishing Board

I was thinking I might go out and watch all the commotion at the Honker Cove boat ramp, Lake Davis. Tomorrow is the fishing Derby at Lake Davis and among many other prizes a fish worth $20,000.00 will be planted. Maybe bring a couple of beers, a bag lunch and just sit and watch all the people go at it. With boats running in to each other and the dock and the ramp it should prove to be pretty entertaining. If I do go I'll try and report back but with gas at $4.70 a gallon in Graeagle - OUCH - I might just have to pass.

Hopefully no one will take a pike. That prize might be worth a couple years behind bars...

Hey, I hope they don't stir up the fish too much. Headed up there Monday. Hope there's still something left to catch! Probably camp at Grasshopper for one or two nights. Hey Pete, you might just have to dust off your pontoon boat or float tube (if you still have one). Bad enough having to put gas in one's car, let alone a boat too. Yikes!

I still enjoy fishing from the old tube and pram...but you can cover so much more water with the boat.

I think what they ought to do is tape that $20,000.00 to the fish and leave it in the lake - that'd probably ensure a pretty good turn out for the season.

Betty the reports I'm getting lately are sounding pretty good - rumors of damsels in the water and fish beginning to key in on the west side.

That would be wonderful, if true. Wish this was about two weeks later so the damsel could really get going. Just glad to hear that there ARE some bugs. Was worried that the poisoning would get them too. Thanks for info.

I got out to the lake around 9:00am and the Honker Parking lot was packed. There were rigs / trailers parked along the side of the road clear back to the Grasshopper campground turn-off. I didn't bring any fishing gear, well except for a couple of beers. I set up next to the DF&G and Portola Rotary Club weigh in booths. Said my hello's and expressed a couple of opinions to those in charge.

Nice day - light winds to calm. Didn't see any accidents or conflicts at the ramp. I did have the GMRS/FRS radio on so I was able to pick up conversations on the lake.

The tagged fish had been planted the evening before - the biggest fish planted was 17 lbs.

I left around 2:00pm - I couldn't take any more...

The biggest fish brought in by this time was just over 17"(dang - that's small). More fish seemed to have been taken from shore (East side) than boats to this point in time.



One lady in a boat did have a tagged fish worth $1000.00 - a very happy camper.

I didn't see any fly-fishers but then I didn't get around to the west side of the lake. Did look like there were quite a few people over at Jenkins.

Heard some guy broke off a 4 lb plus fish on the radio.

Oddest craft - some guy launched in a clear plastic pool chair - no waders.

A lot of nice boats!!!

Had one damsel hatch on my arm


A new boat ramp is scheduled to be put in at Honker next week.

And I sure missed having Sammie by my side!!!!
