Pit Report 5-22 to 5/27 18 Years, 2 Months ago
Just got back from 5 days on the Pit. And 5 days is a killer on that river, but as the McCloud was blown out and the Upper Sac appartenly near the same I had little choice but to explore a lot of the Pit that I haddn't before. Checked Hat Creek as there was apparently a Salmon Fly hatch......didn't see any but they were hitting on the Salmon Fly patterns I threw them and ignoreing the dropper Nymph.

Weather was cool and at times rainey and the water was pehaps 6" above normal, which is a heck of a lot for that river. Saw a lot of bugs but only sporatic surface action. Most notably were the Golden Stones were all over the place (craweling not flying), and there were big PMD's on and off all the time.

Had to work for every fish and there were several slim days of the bunch, but when I could get to a raise, the fish count went up and in amongs the smaller 10-11"ers were the odd 15"er.....all plump as usual. I bagged my first honest 18"er on a Golden Stone.....wow! nice fish, must have been 3-4 lbs. But I'll tell you, he fought a lot less than a good number of the 14-15-16"ers that got away from me, that is for sure. All Bow's, but I met a fellow in Burney who'd just bagged a 17" Brown on a late day dry and had a nice photo to show for it.

All and all, not bad being stuck on the Pit over a long weekend of cold/wet waether with limited competition on the water.

I'll add a couple of pictures. Saw two what I believewd were Eagles nests on the tops of broken trees about 1/2 mile down from the Brittney Dam.......no birds though. Mike

Great report an pics. I'm really looking forward to the Bash as we'll be up that way. Probably not fishing the Pit, though.
