South Tahoe recommendations? 18 Years, 3 Months ago
Hi,

Turns out, I'll be in South Tahoe this weekend. After intense negotiations, I have Saturday afternoon & evening to fish. I haven't fished up there, any recommendations?

Thanks!

John

Hey there John, I'm pretty new to this area, but I've been doing a lot of exploring in the last week or so, mostly creeks off of HW 50. This is pretty close to the peak of runoff, so your options are a little bit limited. The E. Fork Carson, as I understand it, is high and off color and not an option. Normally that would be your best river option. There are some creeks in the area, but I think lots of them are actually closed. You may want to call the fly shop in Gardnerville and see how the NV rivers are doing. You can also check with Frank at Off the Hook in Placerville. It feels like this area is still a few weeks from dropping into ideal shape, but there are probably places I just don't know about yet, so I'd keep asking around.

Bjorn,

Thank you very much for your help. Maybe this is some good time to practice still water fishing.

Thanks,

John

You should grab Fly Fishing the Tahoe Region... it's a great primer on many of the watersheds around Tahoe...

http://www...en-Haggard/dp/0965256626

It has sections on the American, Yuba and Carson watersheds and includes creeks as well as still water options. It even lets you know if there is casting room at the lakes or if a float tube is needed.

The weather has been cooler the past few days and looks to stay cool this weekend last I checked, that might help on the creeks front, but it seems to be a real moving target.

Belated report - West Fork of the carson 18 Years, 2 Months ago
Bjorn,

Thanks for the pointers a couple weeks ago. I ended up fishing the west fork of the carson on Memorial day weekend. The Hope Valley was beautiful. The fishing was slow for me, but still worth the effort.

The good news, my wife loved the area and wants to return often.

Thanks,

John
