The Northern California Fly Fishing Board

This is a family trip near where there happen to be fish, as opposed to a fishing trip with family... So I'm not getting a load of fishing time. We got in yesterday and I went out with my dad to see the beach... it's huge... kind of like getting to Lake Siskiyou and not knowing much about lake fishing... we cast around a bit... wind blowing really good, high tide... not factors that stack up in our favor. No fish even seen.

This AM I got out when my little, tiny, beautiful daughter went down for a nap... low tide, less wind... I could see a bridge of dead coral heading out into the little bay. Walked out as far as I dares and started casting... about the third cast I hooked something, it took some line off, felt really nice and then I was off. Cast around a bit more and didn't feel another fish. I don't really know what I'm doing out here in the salt, but it is fun to try new things.

This is probably going to be how it goes for the next couple days... traveling with a 15 month old does not let itself to lots of fishing time, but we are having a grand time anyway.

All you have to do is put the rod in the kids hand... guaranteed there will be a take. (just hold on to the kid)

Are you near Princeville/Hanalei or on the Poipu/Koloa side? In either case, there are still a lot of places just a short drive away that still see relatively light pressure. Obviously, much less wind on the West/South shores.

If you head to see the Mark Twain's "Grand Canyon of the Pacific", make sure you stop at Jojo's Shaved Ice in Waimea. The best in Hawaii I think.......

We are on the North, Anini Beach... doubt I'll really be going anywhere but there... it's right across the street and it fits with the amount of time I have to fish!

I have a place in Princeville I go to alot. Annini is a very calm area for beaches around there due to the shallows and reef in the distance. I've never fished it but I have fished around the Tunnels Beach area with a native Hawaiian I met one year. If you walk out as far as possible before fishing, you will have the better luck on decent size fish (12"-15" instead of the small tropical fish in the shallows that are more fun watching with a snorkel. I have also seen some very large sea turtles around the Tunnels Beach area while snorkeling. Be careful of what you catch. The Humuhumunukunukuapua'a (trigger fish) is the state fish and is protected. Big time fine!

Just wait for the tide to get super low, then walk way out on the coral "cliffs" out a bit north of Anini Beach (between Anini and Princeville). Watch the tide, so you can walk back in, rather than swim back in. Stand on the coral plateaus, and cast down into the sandy canyons. Be ready to cut off your line if you hook anything huge (a shark, a tuna), so you don't have your rod/reel stolen from you by the Gods of the Sea . . . I found clousers and eel patterns work great, perhaps in white...and crabs, too.

Just got back from two hours of casting into one of those deep cuts at low tide... nada, zilch, zero... man... it looked perfect, but I'm just not getting into fish. We go out tomorrow morning with a guide (Rob) and that is likely to be my next outing. I snorkled yesterday and saw lots of fish in the deep cuts, but when I went out this AM... well... I obviously still have a mountain to learn about fishing in the salt.

Pronounciong Hawaiian words is pretty easy.

You just pronounce every letter, including the individual vowels. At least that's what she said....

Bjorn - i've fished similar "cuts" in maui and found, the deeper i went, the better i did. started with floating lines, then to intermediate, and so on - unless you're seeing bait busting on the surface or get lucky with cruising fish - i think the best bet is to get some weight on that fly, some sinking line, and let your fly get down before the retrieve. start with short casts close in to the reefy goodness, work your way across through the deeper water, cast as far as you can cast - vary the retrieve, vary the depth, vary the fly - lather, rinse, repeat. also - put some wire between your leader and your fly - lots of toothy stuff out there.

or better yet - get a spinning rod, put a heavy wooden bobber on it with a jig or something dropped a few feet below, vary the speed of the retrieve, use the bobber as a surface attractor (a la trolling for bill fish) - cast it a mile further than your fly rod, cover more water, catch more fish
