Big Bad Spey Rod 17 Years, 10 Months ago
Hey All, I'm heading off to... FISH tomorrow... for FOUR days... been a while since I've really had a good dose of my fix, so I'm really looking forward to it.

I get this hall pass because the 2008 California River Awards were last night and I am now on the other side of that. We honored Yvon Chouinard (who some of you will respect deeply, and others of you will think is a pinko commie scum, I'm in the first category, but you probably already knew that). We had a really spectacular rod donated that was a bit too specialized for my audience last night. A new, Sage Z Axis 13'4" 8 wt spey rod. The thing retails for $800. I would let it go for $450. Just drop me an email... This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Going to fish the Lower Sac, McCloud (yeah, I know about the flows, but I need to fish it anyway) & Upper Sac. I can practically hear the water now.

Bjorn- too bad you did not post here prior to the event. I would have liked to have attended such an event, especially if they honored Yvon Chouinard. Friends of the River is just one of the organizations my club donates funds to. As to your reference to "pinko Commie" by some, I doubt it remotely comes close to describing Yvon.

Hey Gitt, it was a good time and Yvon was very interesting to hear speak... in a good way. I should have posted about it. Got a little too busy down the stretch.

There was a long thread a while back about Patagonia and some folks indicated they did not think highly of Yvon. I am one of the guys that does think highly of him... he's an inspiration in an age when it can be hard to find people to take inspiration from. Puts his money where his mouth is and lives what he believes. Solid guy.

I wanted to attend when I heard about the event, but I didn't pony up the cash. Bummer...sounds like it was a great event.

Speaking of cash...let me know if haven't sold that rod. I've been looking for a spey for N. Cal and PNW rivers...but not sure if that's the right one.

It was a good time. Probably not the right rod for CA... a bit too heavy, I'd think. Nice rod... but this is really a 15-25 pound steelhead rod, I'd think. Others may disagree.

I have no idea why anyone would consider Yvon Chouinard to be a commie pinko scum. I use a lot of his products and have always found his philosphy and ideals to be above reproach, not to mention the quality of what his company produces to be first rate as well.

Good luck out there fishing Bjorn. I may get in a little this week as well.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It looks like you won't having any problems selling that canon though...

Charlie,

Are you still building rods?

I have a friend's husban who is a fishing buddy that needs a 3 pcs 3 wt around 8'-3", like my winstorn IM6. Anyway I offered to build one for him for x mas, but time is running short. If you are still doing the Okaizu thing I bet she would be better seved by particpating in that rather than having me wrap a half A job. Send me an e-mail if you get a chance and we can figure it out.
