The Northern California Fly Fishing Board

Well, Dennis was off chasing elk yesterday so I had the whole day to myself to get in some fishing. Had to wait for it to warm up a little since it was 11 when I got up in the morning. My fishing day started at 11 and the first thing I managed to do was fall in the very cold water. Nothing too bad. Just wet arms and a very sore knee, but I never let something like that stop me. There were fishies to be caught and that is exactly what I did. By the end of my fishing day it was somewhere around 30 to 35 fish with most above 15 in. Most were rainbows with about 1/2 dozen browns thrown in. Largest rainbow 19", largest browm 16". All it took was finding the spot and the right fly. The fly of the day was a zebra midge with a small tag of red flash. It seemed I could not keep them off the thing.

Went back out today for lunch break and scored 8 fish. The first two were both 17" browns. Really had to talk myself into going back to work as it is a beautiful 65 degrees here today. Most of you will probably know where I am fishing so I will not bring up the name of the river. It's nice that I have only seen 4 others fishing this part of the river for the past two days.

Now time for a rant. Why on earth would someone think it appropreate to sit in a whole for the entire day. I have seen the same guy show up 4 times this past week and stay the whole day in the same spot. The one day I get to go out for the day and there he is again. 6 hours in the same spot.

Answer to your rant: He's an idiot Jan...we just have to live with them. Kind of like we do with Democrats..

Did Dennis get an elk? Elk steak is good. Just back myself...I got these two, one neck shot, one head shot...very very little meat ruined, plus a 4X4 Mulie down. Yum on future hunting and fishing trips.....

Hi Mom... Maybe he will have some luck tonight but it is like a city of hunters out there right now. The season opened yesterday. I think next year we will rent some horses and get way back. We also need to get more scouting done earlier in the fall. Next year he is also going to have his archery license. He was too late to get the needed class for a license this year. This state is the only place I know of where you can walk in, buy a gun and walk out with it and your hunting license but to get an archery license you have to take a week class unless you already have had a license from another state.

It would not be the first time someone bogarted that spot!

I'm jealous you're fishing and I'm not. Well, maybe gotta head to the T in a couple weeks and cast and see if the steelhead have arrived.

Tell Dennis to save the hide for tying Elk Hair Caddis!

You know the spot and Charlie can probably figure it out also. The spot where I caught most of my fish was Hud's riffle here. I said hello and told him this was for him. I sure miss him and think of him every time I fish that spot.

Sorry about that Buzz. Actually finding the fish was a bit more challanging this time. Due to the gates breaking on the dam some of the best holding spots have been filled in with gravel. Now that the gates have been fixed the water has been lowered to the extreme. In fact I have never seen this river that low. A couple of days searching and I finally located them. I think that they are also very hungry at this point because the break also washed away alot of the usual bugs.

My intended (lame) humorous sarcasm must have been lost in the flatness of the internet experience (no voice or facial expressions).

Not to worry. I did not take it that way at all. I just thought I would give a little more explanation. It always surprises me when I read articles or see TV shows where people can't catch fish on this river or feel it is extremely difficult to fish. I think it is one of the best places for beginners because the fish can be very forgiving of a bad drift, just not a bad fly. Ugly yes, bad (wrong) no.

I would love to test out that idea one of these years. That particular river is on my "to-fish" list.
