Short MT report 18 Years ago
Well, just returned from a busy 2 weeks in Montana with lots of family coming and going but we did get in lots of fishing. It just happened to be a very late Salmonfly hatch this year and probably one of the best years where we are. I have never seen that many bugs flying and in the bushes. There were even confused golden stones try to get it on with salmonflies. Anyway, the second week my brother was there for what is now the 3rd year. As the story goes he insists on nymphing because he knows he can caught fish that way. Pretty frustrating for me as this was one of the prime times for dry fly and he still kept nymphing. Finally on the 5th day I told him I was going to kick his a$$ if he did dry fly. I showed him the fly to use, set him up in a prime spot and told him right where to cast. He finally got his first fish on a dry.

No, those fish are a little more of a challange. Let's just say that it was caught where most of the people fishing are either walking through or ignoring because there would never be fish in that water. How little they know.

Just to add a note, this year was some of the worst river etiquette I have ever seen. One guy came everyday from Big Sky and sat in the same whole for the entire day. On the last day he was there we got into an argument as he accused me of walking through his fish. I advised him in a nice way what I thought of his whole hogging. He never came back for the rest of the week we were there. Another time I was sitting down tying on a new fly and a guy came casting right into my run. When I advised him of it he just looked at me like I was crazy. Good thing that the guide showed up right then and told him they would be moving up stream.
