As far as I know, there are no major impoundments on the Upper Merced, that is, in or above the Park (there may be some smaller diversion dams for Park water supplies). As for the Merced in the valley, McClure had a big release on the 23rd, which corresponded to a large inflow at about the same time, and more recently releases have been ramping up.

Maybe someone had an itchy trigger finger, and got a little nervous, because of all the rain and snow, or perhaps they were testing the spillway, and a gate got stuck. According to CDEC, there were no scheduled releases for that time period. I'm glad I wasn't pontooning the river when
that wave hit.
