He might have to be put down, he's 15 and losing control of his hindquarters (arthritis is only part of it) in his youth, he was one of the most popular dogs in town, played tennis (quite well for even for a Border Collie)was the terror of all the squirrels in the park, as well as the friend of all the kids in the local school.

Sorry to hear that Doug :( 17 Years, 9 Months ago
Sometimes I think it would be best if our pets lived longer than us.

It's so hard. The biggest issue standing between me, and new pet ownership, is how my last couple lasted forever, and had to have my help, to move on.

But what a blessing, that can be.

When the time is right, you'll both know it. They'll tell you. Animals are always honest.

I am sorry, Doug 17 Years, 9 Months ago
I know how difficult it is when pets reach that age and it is up to us to make a decision. It is very hard when the time comes to say goodbye. My prayers are with you and your dog.

Doug I'm with you...it's a tough time. 17 Years, 9 Months ago
Sammie, my 12 year old Golden Retriever, was diagnosed with cancer this past October and given two weeks to two months to live. Bless her heart she's still with me but I know the time is coming. But so long as she's not in any pain and can get around she's not going anywhere, but when the time does come she'll let me know....and as tough as it is it's the best thing you can do - for both of you.

My thoughts are with you,

Pete

Sonny, the black lab, ran ahead to make sure there were no gophers or jackrabbits in the way. If you don't give a dog a specific job, he'll improvise one for himself and it will invariably be fun. There's a lesson there.

Hey Pete,

I have been wondering how you and Sammie were doing. I am glad to hear that she isn't in any pain and still with you. Give her a hug from me and Snicker!

Doug,

So sorry to hear that. As others have said it is so tough to lose a dog they are such a huge part of our lives and so unconditionally loyal and loving. Sounds like he's lived a great dog life (squirrels, tennis, kids - i.e. a dog's dream)

I'll give my boys some extra scratches tonight in his honor.

We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams

I think a lot of dog owners here (or should I say dogs who are people owners) know exactly what you're going through. I lost two about the same time, years back, and now the Enforcer is 10 years old. But she still likes to go hiking in the mountains with me. Except now when I leave the trail for a little bushwhacking, she just comes to a stop and makes me pick her up and carry her. She has me trained real well.
