While we are blessed in the fly fishing world with all the new technology, equipment and such, I have to wonder if we aren’t our own worst enemy.
Now, fly lines have finally reached the $100 mark, rods are running up to and exceeding $1000, reels and all the other accessories are in the same state of ascension. New products are great and I, along with most others, like to see, touch and use them. But it is getting a bit ridiculous, isn’t it?
A fly line that according to the manufacturer casts further than any other before. BS in my book. It’s still only about 100 feet long. How much backing are you going to shoot? How often do you ever cast that far and I know of few, if any, who fish that far out. And for a $100 or more I sure can buy several lines that will suffice just fine, thank you.
Before someone goes out and purchases these new items on the market, take a close look at what is currently available; at what you are currently using; at your satisfaction/dissatisfaction with your current set up; and, then decide if you are buying this because you really need it or just because you can to show off, to be the “best on the block”.
