Spent the afternoon down in the Old Mill District in Bend. At the recent NCCFFF event in Lodi, I heard lots of good things about the 18 hole casting course near the new Orvis store in Bend. There was a National Championship casting competition held there in September, which attracted casters from all over to this first of a kind course. So with a free couple of hours in between groccery shopping for last minute Turkey Day stuff, and a trip to the quilt and fabric store, I figured I had to stop by and see the course. What a neat concept, and wonderful course. I chose to walk the entire course without a fly rod, as the 15-20 MPH winds would have challenged even an expert caster, much less my skills. But nonetheless, it was a really cool walk. The course starts at its namesake store, and wanders through the Old Mill District past restaurants, across the river past the Les Schwab ampitheater, through a series of ponds and lawns and back across the river once again to finish back at the Orvis store. No question, it appears to be a tough test of fly casting skills, even when the wind isn't blowing. The link below is a slide show of a number of the holes and scenery around the course.
While it is a bit of an Orvis commercial, it is still a cool place to visit!
